The Transylvanian Wildlife Project (TWP)
at the 26th International Bear Conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia

More than 250 bear researchers and managers from all over the world have participated at this year´s international bear meeting (16.-21.09.2018) in the capital of Slovenia which has been organized within the framework of the LIFE DINALP Bear Project and by the International Association for Bear Research and Management (IBA). The main topic of the “Life with Bears” assembly was human-bear coexistence in human dominated and politically fragmented landscapes. At this gathering which is important for bear conservation, the TWP was represented by its wildlife biologist and project manager Mrs. Alexandra Sallay-Mosoi, who is a PhD student at the Institute of Wildlife Biology and Game Management (IWJ) of the BOKU University in Vienna, Austria.

The engineering office EDM in Vienna has developed novel less-lethal ammunition (EM-A/B) targeted at animal defense use for primarly protected species like the bear and the wolf that cause damage or pose a risk to humans. The IWJ has been requested to assess the use of these prototypes from a wild-biological point of view, by inspecting whether this special ammunition serves the functional purpose also in compliance with the animal ethics and to what extent its application can fill a demand gap in nuisance wildlife management. Scientific research partners for the evaluation of this innovative high-tech innovation were Dr. med. Armin Zotter (EDM - Consulting Engineers Vienna), Prof. Dr. Klaus Hackländer (head of the IWJ), Rudolf Hafellner (ARat Dipl.-Ing. HTLFL, IWJ), Rudolf Hafellner Senior (director of the shooting site Merkenstein of the Lower Austria Hunting Association) and Dr. István Szász (veterinary of the TWP). This project was made possible by the financial support of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

Many thanks to all contributors for this efficient cooperation! All documents can be found on Life With Bears
